What is Munzee?
Munzee is a real world scavenger hunt game where players are rewarded for finding and capturing hidden objects. Munzee is unique in the capacity that it features both real world and virtual game pieces in order to double the adventure by allowing players to “capture” both virtual munzees and scan physical QR codes on game pieces to earn points. The millions of deployed virtual and physical game pieces distinguish Munzee from a variety of other mobile location-based games on the market.
What do munzees look like?
Munzee game pieces (called “munzees”) come in a wide variety of options from virtual to physical. Physical munzees come in many sizes and shapes and contain a QR-code style barcode. Physical munzees can be printed for free from our website, or you can purchase weatherproof game pieces in the Freeze Tag Online Store. Physical game pieces can be found on durable options such as personal tags and laminated stickers. Virtual game pieces can also be purchased through the Freeze Tag Online Store.

What do I need to play?
Munzee requires the use of a smartphone to access the map and earn points. This is done to validate that you are physically located where the munzee is hidden and that you have actually found it by checking the data in the QR code. The Munzee app is available on iOS and Android devices. We have no immediate plans to support any other devices.
Where did the name come from?
When the game was originally being brainstormed back in 2008, the first idea included using poker chips with unique serial numbers on them. At the same time, we were trying to come up with a clever name that people wouldn't forget. While searching for available domain names, we came across the German word for coin, which is “münze.” Adding an extra “e” to the end left us with a catchy name that also was also individually unique.
Who owns Munzee?
Munzee is a proud member of Freeze Tag, Inc., a leading creator of mobile location-based games played throughout the world. Munzee joins its several sister games, including WallaBee and Garfield Go, in the Freeze Tag gaming portfolio. What is the Munzee time zone?
Munzee Headquarters (commonly referred to as MHQ) is located north of Dallas, Texas, USA in McKinney, Texas, where the game first originated. As such, all database and server activity is also based in the Dallas time zone. All Munzee activity time is based on a 24-hour day centered on Central Standard Time. This is used for timestamps, badges, clan requirements, and all other Munzee activity. To simplify delineating time, all time is referred to in “MHQ” time (meaning CST time).
